Preventive Care

Preventative care is one of the credos by which Georgetown Village Dental has always operated.

This approach involves oral care education, dental protective procedures, and solutions for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. That’s why, from the moment you bring your little one for their first dental appointment at Halton Village Dental, we apply preventative care to avoid:

  • Cavities
  • Gum disease
  • And enamel wear.

Additionally, preventative dental care helps your dentist to identify potential future problems early. Regular preventative care is particularly important for people who suffer from chronic conditions, such as cancer, eating disorders, diabetes and osteoporosis.

Regular Preventative Care

No matter what our patients’ age, we recommend regular dental exams and low radiation dental x-rays as a form of preventative care. It gives your dentist an opportunity to detect any early signs of dental decay. At the end of the dental examination, we will recommend having your teeth cleaned, which helps prevent gum disease and cavities.

Depending on the amount of time that has elapsed since your previous appointment, and how much effort you have put into your personal oral care at home, your dentist may recommend more than one appointment for the prevention or treatment of gum disease.

Preventative care dentistry is particularly important for children. Taking your children to the dentist in the early years can ensure a lifetime of dental health before bacteria has a chance to build up. After a thorough professional cleaning, we can reinforce your dentist’s work using a fluoride varnish to make those little teeth decay-resistant.

Dental sealants are another form of preventative care. Permanent molars usually start to erupt between ages six to twelve. By applying the sealant to the natural grooves in the back teeth, you can help prevent decay.

Later on, many children need braces to prevent misalignment of the jaw as it matures into adulthood. This is another form of preventative dentistry.

Preventative dentistry for adults include:

  • Oral exams, every six months
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Routine x-ray

In many cases, dental plans cover individuals for preventative care, which may include many different aspects for children that may become more costly, worse problems when they grow up. Some of the typical preventative care services offered for kids include:

  • Guidance on good dental habits, eating habits that promote good health, brushing and flossing, and thumb sucking.
  • Oral exams and teeth cleanings every six months
  • Fluoride treatment (up to a specific age)
  • Sealant application
  • Routine x-rays
  • Athletic mouthguards
  • Referral to other dental specialists and orthodontists if need be
  • Identifying health issues that may affect dental health.

These are just some of the forms of preventative care that dentists offer. People of all ages can use preventative dentistry to ensure good dental health for many years. The goal is to prevent cavities, sensitivity, and prevention of gum disease. There’s a lot you can do at home to play a part in your own dental preventative care, namely:

  • Brush your teeth using a brush with soft bristles and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to get rid of food stuck between your teeth before it becomes plaque.
  • Rinse out food particles using mouthwash after flossing.
  • Avoid hard candies, seeds, pits, and meat with hard bones.
  • Avoid tobacco products as they cause dental problems and cancer.
  • Avoid acidic foods, which can harm the enamel.
  • Buy a nighttime mouth guard if you grind your teeth at night.
  • Wear a mouthguard when you participate in sports.
